Name Tags for Networking Events?

Do you think we should have name tags for Networking Events?

When arriving at StartUp Drinks last night we wrote our names on peel-n-stick name tags.   This makes it easier to introduce yourself and helps you "remember" the person' name.

By the way great job as always Yvonne (@yvonnepilon), WEtech and SIFE for organizing the StartUp Drinks.   Great venue at Villains and good opportunity for new entreprenuers to network.

Some networking events have no name tags and others who meet regularly have pre-printed or professional name tags.   What is your preference?

Left or Right Side?

Years ago it was suggested to place your name tag on your right side.   Why?  When shaking hands (most of us shake with right hand) your eyes look to the person' right side where the name tag is.

Check it out next time you are at an event with name tags.  Most will have them on the left side and you can help me start a movement to have them on the right side so we can quickly glimpse their name as we shake hands.

Any thoughts or experiences on name tags?

  1. I like the name tag thing. Not everybody is great at remembering each others names and the name tag is a nice way to cheat.
I hate the peel and stick, they never stay on and always seem to coil up when they get caught on your sleeve, etc.
One suggestion, particularly for those not really comfortable with networking with strangers, personalize your name tag. Have something more than just your name and company on your name tag, perhaps a picture, quote, something personal etc.. This can often times be a nice icebreaker and an easy way to engage in conversations with people you don't know.

  3. Hi Frank,
I also support the name tag idea. Not only does it help break the ice when meeting someone new, it also helps those of us who sometimes forget a persons name.
Whether it goes left or right side - no preference.
