Entrepreneurial Spirit Rocks WindsorEssex

We welcome Guest Blogger Yvonne Pilon, Vice-President of WEtech Alliance Network.

Yvonne is very instrumental in promoting the Region' Entrepreneurs and it's People Like Yvonne who Rock WindsorEssex!  Check out her video after reading her story.

According to Startup Canada, there are more than 1 million small businesses that employ 48 per cent of Canada’s total workforce, account for 25 per cent of total exports, and provide 30 per cent of our total GDP.  Of those small businesses, 4.7 per cent are classified as high-growth enterprises and are responsible for 45 per cent of new job creation in Canada.

So, if entrepreneurs play such a vital role in Canada’s prosperity, what can we do to spread this can-do spirit even further?  Well, why not bring one the most notable entrepreneurs to Windsor for lunch.

A few months ago I entered a contest on the Inbiz.me Facebook Page for the chance to win lunch with David Chilton, author of the The Wealthy Barber and Dragon on CBC’s Dragons’ Den. To my surprise I was selected as 1 of 10 finalists to compete in this very “tasty” opportunity.

Although the contest is targeted towards entrepreneurs, I still took my chances and created a video as part of Phase 2 of the contest. My rational…one day I hope to be an entrepreneur. In fact, some days I feel like I already am. Working with WEtech Alliance since its inceptions, myself and our team are in fact “growing” a social enterprise. The once team of 1, is now a team of 7.

I can’t also forget the entrepreneurial spirit that I live and breathe every day. I love entrepreneurship and everything that they it brings to a community – new ideas, passion, jobs….. So, because of this passion, my pitch to the contest judges was that I would like to ‘Pay It Forward’ and invite the other entrepreneurs of the Downtown Windsor Business Accelerator to lunch if selected as the winner. This opportunity would not only benefit all tenants and myself but would help showcase just how awesome the Windsor entrepreneurial community is. We really do ROCK #WErocks!

Building a Strong Team

How does your company build a strong Team?

Building a strong team within an organization includes a balance of work and non-work team building activities.

AlphaKOR has a number of after-hour events to bring the Team closer together.  These are optional to attend and we have good turnout at all events.

We currently have a weekly AlphaKOR family skate, our annual holiday dinner, the family holiday fun day and the BBQ's in the summer just to name a few.

It's a whole different story when yours truly is on skates!    What an experience to have an employee coach me, the President, on the ice.   This is a real example of increasing respect for each to build a strong Team.

Increasing the team spirit after hours has contributed to the Team working closer together during business hours.   As AlphaKOR continues to grow these team building activities become more important.

On the business side, increased discussions amongst the employees and monthly team discussions meetings contribute to company wide teamwork and communication.
